Pelican is a three storey house in the heart of historic Staithes, a picturesque working fishing village within the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.  Pelican sleeps 8-10 in four bedrooms.  It has a separate lounge and dining room that can be opened up and a well equipped kitchen on the ground floor.  The rear door accesses the decked backyard and our path to the start of the harbour walls.  The tidal beck runs right past and beyond into the sea. Stairs to the first floor lead to a bathroom and two bedrooms and then a further flight leads up to the second floor shower room and two more bedrooms.

Adorned with art and many extra comforts, Pelican is a large seaside house in an idyllic location.

Following a visit to South Carolina and a Folly Beach holiday outside Charleston, we would swim and admire the pelicans flying low and  scanning the sea, in a Red Arrow like formation.  They were hard at work looking for fish and competing with the dolphins below.  On return to Yorkshire we visited Staithes as we often did and during the Staithes Art Festival  we came across artist Mick Kirby-Geddes, a Holmfirth based metal sculptor.  We invested in a larger than life pelican, welded from old gas bottle canisters.  Actually it’s not the one on the roof.  The first is in our garden in Little Crakehall, Wensleydale.  There just had to be a second and the one here in Staithes is nestled nicely on the bay window proudly announcing your arrival to the heart of the village.

Home from home

The house is our home from home and we hope you’ll feel the same.  That’s why we enjoy staying here so much and that is of course why we bought the place.  It had to be Staithes of course, there were no other alternatives and it took us a while to find the right home but we saw the potential and took the plunge in August 2014.  We named it Pelican.

To create this homely atmosphere we try to ensure we provide you with everything you need.  Have a look at the Pelican Layout to see how the three floors work.  Also have a look at Pelican Comforts where you will see some, not all, of the additional comforts we hope you will enjoy.

In making this a home from home we hope we have added a touch of extra value.  If not then let us know, we’d love to hear your views and make the house even better.  For now we have:
Pelican comforts

Chilled out – a simple but very effective wireless speaker for your music played from your devices (tablet, mobile phone, laptop) via bluetooth, so no one’s music misses out.

Internet – the village lacks mobile phone coverage and that really is a positive.  Think of it this way, a holiday is for switching off.  Never fear though, at Pelican we have extensive internet coverage and so you can access your email and get on line with your own devices if you choose to.

Wake up and smell the coffee, or at any time of day with freshly brewed beans that you have just ground.

Alfresco at any time in the sheltered yard, with a view of the beck and Jack’s Cottage, throw a shrimp on to the barbie and enjoy hot BBQ fare.

It’s a dog’s life – bring the family pet and we’ll make them welcome with their own bed, bowl and a little doggy gift.

DVDs and Games galore…
